July News from Friends of Lake Monroe
Help Us Get New Faces on the Lake
Thanks to generous sponsorship from Sassafras Audubon Society, we are able to provide a FREE sunset paddle on August 16 for community members who might not otherwise get the chance.  However, we need YOUR HELP spreading the word.  Please share this email or our Facebook post with anyone who might be interested.  Registration details are on our event page.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Kayak Trips
Thanks to Sassafras Audubon Society, we were also able to take a group from Big Brothers Big Sisters out on the lake on Wednesday June 12.  This is a great opportunity for "Littles" who have never been to the lake to experience the joys of paddling.
Want to help?  We have room for two Friends of Lake Monroe members to join in a canoe on our next BBBS paddle on Saturday July 20 at 7:30AM.  Contact Keith Bobay at volunteer@friendsoflakemonroe.org for more information.

Have a Boat?
Do you have a boat on Lake Monroe?  We are looking for help installing a wave sensor attached to a buoy out near Cutright SRA.  Installation involves dropping a cinder block anchor into the lake so we are hoping to find something a little bigger than a kayak.  Contact science committee volunteer Howard Webb at webb.howard@gmail.com if you can help.  Thank you!

Septic Program Update
Many thanks to Shian'ah Cox from the Monroe County Health Department for an excellent presentation about septic system maintenance on June 20.  We had 14 participants who brought lots of great questions.  Remember, pump your tank every 3-5 years and only flush the 3 P's.
“Well, I never thought we'd be attending on workshop on the three p’s (poo and pee and toilet paper) but we are glad we did.  We gotta keep this stuff out of our lake, and we certainly learned how at the workshop put on by Maggie, the watershed coordinator, and friends. Thanks for an edible p.  Pizza! It was great!” - Kevin and Anne Clark
So far we have issued 74 vouchers through our Septic Maintenance Voucher Program in Monroe County.  There's still time to claim yours if you live in the Monroe County portion of the Lake Monroe watershed and need to pump your tank (which should be done every 3-5 years).  Apply today on our website: www.friendsoflakemonroe.org/septic
